YOUR MONTHLY DIY PR TIP FROM MIKE FARLEY

JANUARY 2008
Procrastination Is Not Your Friend

If you're in a band and doing your own PR, booking, management, or all of the above, chances are you have a lot on your plate.  In addition to making music, you have to make phone calls, send out CDs and press kits, stay in touch with your fans, follow up after sending packages, keep up with your band's finances....whew, I'm getting tired just writing all of that.

And if you're doing all of this, chances are also good that there are few things on the back burner that just keep getting pushed aside and never get done.  Those are your big-picture things, like exploring more ways to generate exposure and income for your band, or generating ideas to do those things--things like researching new tour markets or finding film/TV music supervisors to pitch your music to (or companies, like TAXI, that do that for you).

Prioritzing these tasks should be like a business to you, because that's essentially what you're running.  But if you really want to make that jump to the next level, it's imperative to start knocking these big-picture items off your to-do list.  The sooner you do that, the sooner opportunites will come your way, and the sooner you can move on to other things that, well, generate exposure and income.

You don't have the time, you say?  To that, my advice is to get up one hour earlier in the morning and start tackling these tasks as if they were a part of your daily routine.  Not a morning person?  Stay up one hour later.  Either way, the hours are there, you just have to find them.  More specifically, the hours are there if you want them to be there, and if you want to prioritize your life and your career.  It's your choice what you do with your time, but ultimately you have to look in the mirror and tell yourself you're doing everything you can do to succeed.

Procrastination is not your friend, nor is it really anyone's friend.

So stop reading this, and start doing things to help you and your band inch forward!
