November 2013 Newsletter

One of the most important aspects of owning a small business these days is to have a functional website, something I will admit to having let sit on the back burner for too long. But thanks to our web designer Ryan, we have a new site that is more functional and up-to-date than it’s been in quite a while. In addition, Ryan has our Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud pages all working, humming along and inter-connected. So check them out when you have a minute and let us know what you think.

Below you will see and hear what we at Michael J. Media have going on this month and beyond. And now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go raid the Halloween candy bowl one more time! Enjoy your November everyone….

West of Aldine Minneapolis band West of Aldine has evolved from a small acoustic trio into a hot groove-oriented group in the past two years. Along with touring clubs throughout the Midwest, they are currently in the middle of a self-initiated high school tour where they donate 20% of merchandise proceeds to school music departments in Minnesota and Wiscosin. The band also recently performed multiple showcases at both SXSW & RedGorilla Music Festivals in Austin, TX, and won the Best Overall Performance award at the 2013 Beloit International Film & Music Festival.

Nicholas David For more than a decade, Nicholas David has composed alternative soul music that connects with people worldwide on a deeply human level. Prior to his unforgettable 2012 run with Team CeeLo on NBC’s The Voice, Nicholas had already recorded five critically acclaimed albums, experienced national radio airplay and participated in multiple charity and collaborative projects. Nicholas recently returned to The Voice as a guest artist to unveil his new original single, "Say Goodbye," from his self-titled EP, and within 24 hours the EP hit #1 on the iTunes Alternative Chart and #2 on the iTunes overall Top Album Chart.

Will Kimbrough Sideshow Love (February 2014) Think of Will Kimbrough as the Sherlock Holmes of songwriting — a sharp-eyed observer of humanity who notes every detail and spares nothing in his analysis. His new case study is Sideshow Love, a dozen songs that play out like a collection of smartly crafted short stories, laden with generous melodies and arrangements that balance virtuoso playing with just the right amount of space to let each of the characters within them breathe. The theme is a familiar one: love. But what’s novel is the telling. Kimbrough’s perspective shifts effortlessly between sharp- and misty-eyed, from laughter to tears, as he weaves an arc through the stages of a romance over his eighth solo release’s course.

The Iveys Jenna’s Song (early 2014) Acoustic-rock sibling sensations The Iveys are releasing Jenna's Song in early 2014, their third original full length album following over four hundred live shows, five national tours, and multiple videos in only a few short years. Binding love of each other, life, music with endless energy and a lyrical wisdom far beyond their youth, they have been influenced by and likened to an array of artists spanning from The Eagles, The Avett Brothers, and Matchbox Twenty to The Fray, and countless contemporary indie artists. With harmonies and a style as unique as their shared gene pool, Arlen (vocals, guitar), Jessica (vocals, piano), and Jillian (vocals, key/string arrangements) Ivey continually refine and expand their talents, while rapidly growing their fan base and already impressive repertoire.

Tommy and the High Pilots In support of their latest, Only Human (May 2013), Santa Barbara rock band Tommy and the High Pilots are about to set off on a month-long tour with Plain White T’s and Parachute. For Only Human, the band worked with producers Matt Wallace (The Replacements, Maroon 5), Marc McClusky (Weezer) and Jason McEntire (Son Volt). Recorded in multiple studios all across the country, the songs reflect a feeling central to Tommy and the High Pilots: that restless dissatisfaction that comes before you settle into life. The songs strike a chord as power pop, with clear influences from the jangle pop of the ‘80s and arena rock anthems.

Jeff Campbell/Megan Slankard will be playing some tour dates together in December, including a big show on December 20 at Center of Harmony, near Pittsburgh. Recently selected as the winner of Guitar Center's National Singer Songwriter 2 Competition, San Francisco based Jeff Campbell recently finished up a 4 song EP with six-time Grammy winning Producer John Shanks, with a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live slated on the horizon as the release show. Bay area singer-songwriter Megan Slankard has independently sold over 30,000 copies of four independently released albums. Her most recent release, A Token Of The Wreckage, is "an edgy alt-rock release that is a breath of fresh air" (Maverick Magazine), “gleaming, grooving, and gritty” (Minor 7th), with "thoughtful construction and clever wordplay" (Performer Magazine). or
