Twin Cities based singer, songwriter and performing musician Tim Mahoney knows firsthand what it’s like to prepare for auditioning for reality TV shows. He was a contestant on CBS’s INXS: Rock Star in 2006, making his way to the Top 16 and narrowly missing the chance to appear on national TV (the final 14 made it there). But Mahoney would have his chance again five years later, when he was on the inaugural season of the hit NBC reality show The Voice. Mahoney did appear on TV this time, but unfortunately his coach, Adam Levine (Maroon 5), cut him in the “battle round.”

Pure sound is sound that evokes passion and instills a sense of being within the listener and that's exactly what Tim Mahoney's new EP "Brooklyn" does, set for release September 23. With smooth tones and accessible messages, Mahoney (who was a contestant on the inaugural season of The Voice) has created a release that is full of everything that he hopes the hearts of his fans yearn to hear.

The theme(s) from the EP stem from real life situations from Mahoney's life or from those around him. “All of my new songs are stripped down and introspective, which really is my passion now," Mahoney said. "I’m writing songs that I think mean something to me, or to someone else. 'Hold on to Your Heart' is about a friend who I wanted to know was strong enough to get through a difficult time in her life."

But with songs being based in reality, which sometimes means an artist puts his own feelings front and center. In this case, Mahoney’s songwriting on this EP offers a possible glimpse into the unknown. "I think the sadness in ‘Brooklyn’ (title track) comes from me not being married, and this is a look into future." At the same time, one of Mahoney’s passions is charity work (he currently does volunteer work at Gillette Children’s Hospital), and that message of kindness/sympathy is something that also flows throughout this EP.

And so the EP as a whole represents future possibilities for Mahoney. "It might be a vision of what could be” he wonders. “And that maybe everything will just work out."

Either way, Brooklyn is a brave new step for Mahoney, an EP full of raw emotion and pure heart.
