Sunny Days and Slavic roots: Akron rocker Brian Lisik’s …presents The Slovak Club goes far deeper than its facetious epithet
AKRON, Ohio (August 19, 2026) — Akron-based singer-songwriter Brian Lisik’s latest release …presents The Slovak Club (due Oct. 30 on Cherokee Queen Records) began as a lark and grew organically over a two-year span, soaking in its literal surroundings along the way.
“I was just looking for a way to [musically] stretch my legs and try something new one weekend,” Lisik said of the one-off jam session at his brother and long-time drummer, Craig Lisik’s basement studio that birthed the album. “Before we even struck a note Craig said ‘do you have any new songs? Let me set up a mic,’ and we were recording.”
The almost immediate result was the searing 2024 single “Why I’m Here,” recorded in a single take and written almost as instantaneously from a guitar riff and “a bunch of unrelated lyrics I had lying around,” according to Lisik.
A dozen more songs came almost as quickly, but it would take another year-and-a-half, and the release of the live album Goodnight, Detroit, before Lisik would revisit the sessions.
“Craig’s gear at his Shangri-Lane Studio at the time was far from state-of-the-art - and not even in a cool way,” Lisik explained. “I mean, running just a couple instruments straight into an old JoeMeek compressor on ‘Why I’m Here’ sounded amazing and we started going ‘hey, maybe we’re making a record here.’ But that was probably more of a stroke of luck than we’d realized.”
Culling all but the best seven tunes, Lisik called upon the legendary ears of producer Don Dixon (REM, The Smithereens, Gin Blossoms, Counting Crows, Marshall Crenshaw and Lisik’s Gudbye Stoopid Whirled and Hotsy Totsy! albums) to mix the collection.
In spite of …presents The Slovak Club’s somewhat haphazard beginnings, the songs have surprising synergy and are trademark Lisik in their tight, succinct arrangements and unnervingly direct lyrical content.
With “The Window,” “Romanian Eyes” and “Try to Do” featuring narratives filled with markedly sympathetic protagonists seeking peace amidst a world seemingly falling apart at its seams, elsewhere the scathing one-two punch of “Pays to be Paranoid” and “Abattior” lays bare that ubiquitous anxiety and dread in no uncertain terms.
Lisik allows that …presents The Slovak Club can be a rather disquieting musical journey on some levels.
“But it's still got a good beat and you can dance to it,” he quipped. “I definitely wanted it to have a rides-off-into-the-sunset feel. Or maybe it's the opening credits to a new movie. I guess we’ll have to see.”
And then there is that name/album title. To be clear, Lisik sees…presents The Slovak Club as neither a new band nor a new type of project, per se.
“It’s just my next record,” Lisik said. “Honestly, it's no more complicated than Craig and me, two Slovak-American guys making a record right down the road from a Jednota club in Akron’s Firestone Park neighborhood.
“I drove past the club on my way home from a session one evening and snapped a crappy picture of it on my crappy phone. But the sunset in the background was magical. So we kind of had an album cover before we had an album.”
In time, the moniker took on a life of its own, even if the brothers were never quite sure if it was a serious idea or a joke.
“We are kicking around the idea of doing a release show at a pierogi restaurant here in town,” Lisik said. “I just hope nobody expects to hear button boxes or songs about stolen kishka on this thing, or we are in big trouble.”
